Blog#2 Freedom of Speech
Freedom of Speech is one of our most important rights, and is meant to give use the freedom to express our political, religious or other individual views. I'm not sure what the exact rules were in high school, but I do know that shirts with gang colors were banned, and anything deemed offensive. I think there are also similar restrictions at the jc. I do believe in freedom of speech but I also understand why school and such try to stop it from becoming offensive. The problem is that since different views conflict there will always be some conflict. I think it will be a long time before we find a balance between civility and freedom of expression.

That’s true that freedom of speech is one of the most important rights. However, sometimes we should have some limits of our freedom of expression. And I also think that our school has the policy because they want to protect us (students) from troubles.
ReplyDeleteYou're right we all have the freedom to express our views on different subjects but to a certain extent without offending anybody. I think when you look at it, there will always be problems, because this is how our society functions. We might never find a balance between civility and freedom of expression because of how broad it is, and humans all have different viewpoints. I think that is the real beauty of freedom of speech.
ReplyDeleteYour right on the last sentence. We would be living in a perfect world if everyone overcame there differences right? Yeah... unfortunately not many people seem to understand this concept and insist on fighting someone because of what they are wearing, there race, and even there religion. Veeya is right in her comment, I think freedom of speech should be limited because if someone takes there freedom of speech to the very max, then that could cause tension between a rival group or person or anything! And then start a blood feud...
ReplyDeleteBut at the same time people should have there own views on anything they want and be able to express them... I think it swings both ways.
Freedom of speech is one of the most important things that we have in this world. I think people should understand that even young children have a voice and an opinion that they want to express. So i believe that as long as the clothing doesnt indicate violence, they should be able to wear it.
ReplyDeleteYes there will definitely always be conflict of some sort. Your school was similar to my school with the gang colors, it made me feel safer having those restrictions. Freedom of speech should be in our own time especially as kids. Kids need more guidence.
